Bacterial infections

✔️ How does Teconin Antibiotic work?

Teconin kills bacteria by preventing them from forming the bacterial protective covering (cell wall) which is needed for them to survive.

✔️ Side Effects of

• Local reactions: Erythema, injection site abscess (IM use).
• Allergic reactions: Rash, itching, fever, shivering, anaphylaxis.
• Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
• CNS: Weakness, dizziness, headache.
• Auditory: Tinnitus, balance issues.
• Liver dysfunction (rare).

✔️ Dosage and Administration: Teconin

Teconin can be administered intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM):

• IV Administration: As a bolus injection over 3–5 minutes or a 30-minute infusion. For neonates, only the infusion method is recommended.
• Doses are tailored based on infection severity and patient response.

✔️ Adults with normal kidney function: Teconin

• Initial dose: 6 mg/kg (approximately 400 mg) via IV on the first day.
• Maintenance dose: 6 mg/kg/day (400 mg) IV or 3 mg/kg/day (200 mg) IV/IM as a single dose daily.
• Severe infections may require an initial dose of 6 mg/kg (400 mg) twice daily for 1–4 days, followed by 6 mg/kg/day (400 mg) IV.

✔️ Adults with kidney impairment: Teconin

• Moderate kidney dysfunction (creatinine clearance 40–60 ml/min): Reduce daily dose by half or administer on alternate days.
• Severe kidney dysfunction (creatinine clearance <40 ml/min): Reduce the daily dose to one-third or administer every three days.
• For creatinine clearance ≤20 ml/min, treatment is only recommended if blood drug levels can be closely monitored.

✔️ Children with normal kidney function: Teconin

• Ages 2 months to 12 years: Initial dose of 10 mg/kg every 12 hours for three doses, followed by 6–10 mg/kg/day. Higher doses are used for serious infections or neutropenic patients.
• Neonates (up to 2 months): Start with 16 mg/kg on day one, followed by 8 mg/kg/day via slow IV infusion (30 minutes).

✔️ Children with kidney dysfunction: Teconin

Dosage adjustments are similar to those in adults. Monitoring drug levels in the blood is advised for effective treatment.

✔️ For Clostridium difficile infections: Teconin

100–200 mg orally twice daily for 7–14 days is recommended. For maximum bactericidal activity or in cases where Gram-negative bacteria cannot be excluded (e.g., neutropenic patients with fever), combination therapy with another suitable antibiotic is advised.

✔️ Preparation Instructions: Teconin

1. Dissolve 3 ml of water for injection into the vial containing 200 mg or 400 mg of Teconin powder.
2. Gently roll the vial between your hands until fully dissolved (avoid shaking to minimize foam).
3. If foam forms, let the solution rest for ~15 minutes to clear.
4. Only clear, yellowish solutions should be used.

✔️ Compatible Infusion Solutions:

• 0.9% Sodium chloride solution
• Ringer's solution
• Ringer-lactate solution
• 5% or 10% Dextrose solution
• 0.18% Sodium chloride + 4% Glucose
• 0.45% Sodium chloride + 5% Glucose

✔️ Duration of Treatment: Teconin

• Most infections respond within 48–72 hours.
• Endocarditis and osteomyelitis require treatment for at least three weeks.

✔️ Teconin should be used cautiously with nephrotoxic or ototoxic drugs like:

• Aminoglycosides
• Amphotericin B
• Cyclosporine
• Furosemide

✔️ Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to Teicoplanin or its components.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation:

• Pregnancy Category B3: Use only if benefits outweigh risks.
• Avoid during pregnancy and lactation unless necessary.

✔️ Precautions:

Use cautiously in patients with known hypersensitivity to Vancomycin due to potential cross-reactivity.

✔️ Storage:

• Store in a dry place at ≤30°C, protected from light.
• Reconstituted solutions must be used immediately or stored in refrigeration (2–8°C) for up to 24 hours.
