✔️ Side Effects:

Generally well tolerated. Most side effects are mild and self-limiting.

• Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, indigestion, vomiting, flatulence, and rarely, pseudomembranous colitis.
• CNS: Headache, dizziness.
• Allergic reactions: Rash, itching, urticaria, fever, joint pain.
• Blood & Biochemical: Rare reversible changes including thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, eosinophilia, and mild liver/renal test elevations.
• Others: Vaginal or genital itching.

✔️ Dosage & Administration:

Adults & Children >10 years: 200–400 mg daily as a single dose or divided into two doses.

Elderly: Standard adult dose may be given; monitor renal function in severe impairment.

Children (≥6 months): 8 mg/kg/day in one or two doses.

• 6 months–1 year: 3.75 ml/day
• 1–4 years: 5 ml/day
• 5–10 years: 10 ml/day

Typhoid (children): 5 mg/kg twice daily for 10–14 days.

Children >50 kg or >10 years: Use adult dosage.

Children <6 months: Safety not established.

Renal Impairment:

• If creatinine clearance ≥20 ml/min: standard dosing
• If clearance <20 ml/min: do not exceed 200 mg once daily.
• Dialysis patients: follow the same adjustment as those with clearance <20 ml/min.

✔️ Drug Interactions:

Like other cephalosporins, it may slightly increase prothrombin time. Caution is advised when used with anticoagulants.

✔️ Contraindications:

Known allergy to cephalosporins.

✔️ Use in Pregnancy & Lactation:

There are no adequate human studies. Use only if needed during pregnancy. It is unknown whether Cefixime passes into breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings:

• Use cautiously in patients with a history of drug allergies.
• Cephalosporins may cross-react in penicillin-sensitive individuals; severe allergic reactions (including anaphylaxis) have occurred.
• May cause overgrowth of Clostridium difficile, potentially leading to antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

✔️ Overdose Management:

No specific antidote exists. Gastric lavage may be considered. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis do not effectively remove the drug. Even doses up to 2 g in healthy adults have not shown unusual adverse effects.

✔️ Storage Instructions:

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
