Cloram D (0.1%+0.5%) Eye/Ear Drops

Introduction

Cloram D is a prescription medicine having a combination of medicines that is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye or ear. It stops the growth of the bacteria. Cloram D is to be used only in the affected eye or ear in the dose and duration as advised by the doctor. Wash your hands before using this medicine. It is advised to check the label for directions before use. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping the medicine too early may lead to the infection returning or worsening. The most common side effects include irritation and burning sensation at the application site. If these side effects persist for a longer duration, inform your doctor. In case by accident, this medicine goes into your nose or mouth, immediately rinse it with water. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or are allergic to this medicine or taking any other medication. It is advised not to drive or operate heavy machinery after use of this medicine in the eye as it may cause blurring of vision and may affect your ability to drive.

Uses of Cloram D

• Bacterial eye infections

Eye:

• Bacterial Conjunctivitis: The recommended dosage regimen for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis is 1 to 2 drops instilled into the conjunctival sac (s) every 2 hours for 2 days and 1 or 2 drops every 4 hours for the next 5(five days) while awake.
• Corneal Ulcers: The recommended dosage regimen for the treatment of comeal ulcer is 2 drops in the affected eye (s) every 15 minutes for the first 6 hours then 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 30 minutes for the remainder of first day. On the second day, instill 2 drops in the affected eye (s) hourly. On the 3 to 14 days, place 2 drops in the affected eye (s) every 4 hours. Treatment may be continued after 14 days if corneal re-epithelialization has not occurred.

Ear

: For all infections, 2 to 3 drops every 2 to 3 hours initially. Frequency should be decreased gradually as warranted by improvement in clinical signs. Care should be taken not to discontinue therapy prematurely.

Adverse reactions seen with Chloramphenicol are transient ocular burning or discomfort and other reported reactions include stinging, redness, itching, conjunctivitis, foreign body sensation, photophobia, blurred vision, dryness and eye pain. Allergic sensitization may occur with the local use of Chloramphenicol. Elevation of intraocular pressure with possible development of glaucoma, infrequent optic nerve damage and posterior subcapsular cataract formation.

How to use Cloram D

This medicine is for external use only.Take it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the dropper close to the eye/ear without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid or ear. Wipe off extra liquid.

How Cloram D works

Cloram D is a combination of two medicines: Chloramphenicol and Dexamethasone. Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic which stops bacterial growth in the eye/ear by preventing the synthesis of essential proteins required by the bacteria to carry out vital functions. Dexamethasone is a steroid. It blocks the production of certain chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that make the eye/ear red, swollen and itchy.
