Newtap (Tapentadol tablets)

The common (or generic) drug is tapentadol.

It’s manufactured by Alkem Laboratories Ltd (for some versions).   

It comes in several strengths: for example, 50 mg, 75 mg, and 100 mg immediate-release tablets.  

Use: It’s used to treat moderate to severe pain when other painkillers are not enough.  

Mechanism of Action:

Tapentadol is a µ-opioid receptor (MOR) agonist (meaning it activates opioid receptors).  

It also inhibits norepinephrine reuptake (NRI), which helps boost its pain-relief effect.  . 

Side Effects / Risks:

Common side effects: nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, and constipation.  

Risk of respiratory depression (breathing slowing) especially in high doses or when starting treatment. 

Habit-forming: It can lead to dependence or abuse.  

There’s a risk of serotonin syndrome if combined with certain other drugs.  

Warnings / Precautions:

Don’t use with MAO inhibitors (or within 14 days of stopping MAOIs) because of dangerous interactions.  

Use caution in respiratory conditions, brain injury, or conditions that raise intracranial pressure.  

If you stop taking it, you should taper off (don’t stop suddenly), because of potential withdrawal.

There is also a Newtap 48mg + 90mg + 100mg tablet formulation listed on ePharma. 

According to ePharma, this version is a combination of bromelain + trypsin + rutoside trihydrate.  

Use of that combo: It’s used for musculoskeletal pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis, etc. 

Bromelain and trypsin are proteolytic enzymes that help reduce inflammation and swelling. 

Rutoside (an antioxidant flavonoid) helps protect blood vessels and reduces oxidative damage.
