✔️ Side Effects

Generally well-tolerated. Rarely: nausea, vomiting, flushing, sweating, thrombophlebitis, hypersensitivity. Transient liver test changes are possible.

✔️ Dosage & Administration

Depends on nutritional state & metabolic stress:

Normal/mild stress: 0.10–0.15 g nitrogen/kg/day

Moderate stress/malnutrition: 0.15–0.20 g nitrogen/kg/day

Severe catabolism (burns, sepsis, trauma): 0.20–0.25 g nitrogen/kg/day

Infusion rate: 1.4–2.8 ml/min (30–60 drops/min)
Adults: 15–35 ml/kg/day (1000–2000 ml/day)
Children/Infants: 28–35 ml/kg/day, gradually increasing in the first week
In obesity: Calculate dose by ideal body weight

✔️ Contraindications

• Inborn errors of amino acid metabolism
• Severe liver dysfunction
• Severe uremia without dialysis
• Hyperosmolar nonketotic diabetic coma (due to glucose content)

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

• Monitor trace elements (zinc, copper) in long-term use
• Caution in diabetes, heart failure, and renal impairment
• Risk of hyperphenylalaninemia in premature infants – monitor levels
• In malnourished patients, consider vitamin B1 (thiamine) supplementation before glucose administration
• Monitor potassium, phosphate, and blood glucose levels in high-dose or rapid infusions
