✔️ Pharmacology:

Nidazyl IV 500mg/100ml Infusion belongs to the imidazole class of antibacterial drugs and is classified therapeutically as an antiprotozoal agent. The 5-nitro group of Nidazyl IV 500mg/100ml Infusion is reduced by anaerobes metabolically. Studies have demonstrated that the reduced form of this drug interacts with DNA, giving bactericidal action.

✔️ Dosage & Administration of Nidazyl IV 500mg/100ml Infusion

• Nidazyl IV 500mg/100ml Infusion intravenous infusion requires no dilution. For adults and children over 12 years: Infuse 500 mg 8 hourly at a rate of 5 ml/minute. A maximum of 4 g should not be exceeded during 24 hours.

Common side effects include metallic taste, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, and rashes.

✔️ Overdose Effects of Nidazyl IV 500mg/100ml Infusion

Single oral doses of Nidazyl IV 500mg/100ml Infusion, up to 12 g, have been reported in suicide attempts and accidental overdoses. Symptoms were limited to vomiting, ataxia, and slight disorientation. There is no specific antidote, and symptomatic and supportive treatment should be instituted in case of suspected massive overdosages.

✔️ Interaction of Nidazyl IV 500mg/100ml Infusion:

• Disulfiram: Psychotic reactions have been reported in patients using Nidazyl IV 500mg/100ml Infusion and disulfiram concurrently.
• Alcohol: Alcoholic beverages and drugs containing alcohol should not be consumed during therapy and for at least one day afterward to avoid a disulfiram-like reaction.
• Oral anticoagulant therapy (warfarin type): Potentiation of the anticoagulant effect and increased hemorrhagic risk.
• Lithium: Plasma levels of lithium may be increased by Nidazyl IV 500mg/100ml Infusion.
• Cyclosporin: Serum cyclosporin and serum creatinine should be closely monitored when co-administration is necessary.
• Phenytoin or phenobarbital: Increased elimination of Nidazyl IV 500mg/100ml Infusion, resulting in reduced plasma levels.
• 5-Fluorouracil: Reduced clearance of 5-fluorouracil, leading to increased toxicity.
• Busulfan: Plasma levels of busulfan may be increased by Nidazyl IV 500mg/100ml Infusion, resulting in severe busulfan toxicity.

✔️ Contraindications:

Nidazyl IV 500mg/100ml Infusion is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Nidazyl IV 500mg/100ml Infusion or other nitroimidazole derivatives.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation:

Nidazyl IV 500mg/100ml Infusion is classified as FDA Pregnancy Category B. Caution is advised during pregnancy and lactation, and use should be considered only if needed.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings:

• Extended use may require regular hematological tests and monitoring for adverse reactions such as peripheral or central neuropathy.
• Caution is advised in patients with hepatic encephalopathy.
• Patients should be warned that Nidazyl IV 500mg/100ml Infusion may darken the urine.
