✔️ How does Mebalon Topical Ointment work?

Bacitracin: Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis and is effective against many gram-positive bacteria (e.g., staphylococci, streptococci, corynebacteria, Clostridia) and some gram-negative species (e.g., Neisseria, Haemophilus influenzae). Bacitracin is often found in combination with other agents in topical preparations for its broad-spectrum antibacterial activity.

Neomycin: An aminoglycoside similar to gentamicin, it binds to the 30S subunits of bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis and disrupting DNA synthesis. Neomycin is active against many gram-negative aerobes and some strains of staphylococci.

✔️ Side Effects of Mebalon Topical Ointment

Generally well tolerated. Rare cases of allergic reactions may occur.

✔️ Indication of Mebalon Topical Ointment

This combination is indicated for the treatment of topical bacterial infections. It is particularly effective for:

• Atopic dermatitis
• Contact dermatitis
• Stasis dermatitis
• Infected eczema
• Neurodermatitis
• Eczematoid dermatitis
• Anogenital pruritus

It may also be useful as an adjunct treatment for pyodermas, such as impetigo, during specific systemic antibiotic therapy.

✔️ Pharmacology

Neomycin, an aminoglycoside with antimicrobial properties akin to gentamicin, functions by binding to the 30S subunits of the bacterial ribosome, thereby impeding protein synthesis and disrupting DNA synthesis. It exhibits activity against numerous gram-negative aerobes and certain strains of staphylococci. Conversely, Bacitracin hinders bacterial cell wall synthesis and demonstrates efficacy against various gram-positive bacteria, including staphylococci, streptococci, corynebacteria, and clostridia, as well as some gram-negative species such as Neisseria and Haemophilus influenzae. These agents are frequently combined in topical formulations to provide broad-spectrum antibacterial coverage.

✔️ Dosage & Administration of Mebalon Topical Ointment

Clean the affected area gently before application. Remove debris such as pus or crusts from the affected area. Apply the ointment two to three times daily to the affected skin area.

Suitable for use in children at the same dose as adults, but the dose should be reduced in infants. Not recommended for use in neonates.

✔️ Interaction

Bacitracin Zinc: Increased risk of nephrotoxicity when used with other nephrotoxic drugs. May enhance the action of neuromuscular-blocking agents.

Neomycin Sulphate: Additive nephrotoxic and neurotoxic effects with other aminoglycosides, bacitracin, cisplatin, vancomycin, amphotericin B, polymyxin B, colistin, and viomycin. Enhanced toxicity with potent diuretics. May impair the absorption of other drugs and enhance the effect of acarbose and non-depolarising muscle relaxants. May antagonize the parasympathomimetic effect of neostigmine and pyridostigmine. May increase the risk of hypocalcemia in patients receiving bisphosphonates and alter INR when given with anticoagulants. May inactivate the oral typhoid vaccine.

Hypersensitivity to any of the components.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

• The safety of this preparation during pregnancy and lactation has not been established. It should only be used if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

• Do not use on large open wounds, severely injured skin, or areas that exude large volumes of fluid, as hard crusts may form.
• Not recommended for otitis externa treatment if the eardrum is perforated due to the risk of ototoxicity.
• Patients should consult a physician before using for deep or puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns.
• If used for minor skin injuries, discontinue and consult a physician if the condition persists or worsens. Do not use for longer than one week unless directed by a physician.
