Azithrocin IV 500 Infusion

Indications

In both adults and children, azithromycin IV 500 is an antibiotic used to treat numerous bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, ear, nose, throat, lungs, skin, and eyes. Additionally, it works well against typhoid fever and a few STDs, including gonorrhea. A broad-spectrum antibiotic known as azithromycin IV 500 is efficient in killing a variety of gram-positive bacteria as well as some gram-negative bacteria and other microorganisms. This medication should be consumed orally, ideally one hour before or two hours after a meal. As directed by your doctor, it should be used consistently at regular intervals of time.

Pharmacology

Since azithromycin is acid-stable, it can be given orally without the need for protection from gastric acids. It is quickly retained; on a purging stomach, its retention is more obvious. For spoken dose forms, the time to crest concentration in adults ranges from 2.1 to 3.2 hours. Since phagocytes have a high concentration of azithromycin, the antibiotic is efficiently delivered to the site of contamination. Huge quantities of azithromycin are released during active phagocytosis. Azithromycin concentration in tissues can be more than 50 times higher than in plasma. This is frequently caused by tall lipid solubility and particle capture.

Because of its long half-life, azithromycin can be administered in large doses while still maintaining bacteriostatic levels in the affected tissue for several days. Azithromycin's plasma concentrations decreased in a polyphasic pattern following a single 500 mg measurement, with a cruel clear plasma clearance of 630 mL/min and a terminal end half-life of 68 hours.

Microbiology: Azithromycin inhibits microbial protein synthesis by attaching to the 50S ribosomal subunit of sensitive bacteria. The production of nucleic acids is unaffected.

Dosage

Azithromycin Injection (For IV Infusion): 

The recommended dose of Azithromycin for injection for the treatment of adult patients with community-acquired pneumonia due to the indicated organisms is:

• 500 milligrams administered intravenously once daily for at least two days. To finish a 7 to 10-day course of medication, azithromycin should be taken orally once daily at a dose of 500 mg given as two 250-mg tablets after intravenous therapy. The doctor's judgment and the clinical response should be used to determine when to convert from intravenous to oral medication.
• For the treatment of adult patients with pelvic inflammatory illness brought on by the mentioned organisms, 500 mg of azithromycin is advised as a single daily dose administered intravenously for one to two days. Azithromycin should be administered intravenously for the first seven days, then orally once day at a dose of 250 mg. The doctor's judgment and the clinical response should be used to determine when to convert from intravenous to oral medication. An antibiotic drug having anaerobic activity should be administered in addition to azithromycin if anaerobic microorganisms are suspected of being a factor in the infection.
• Azithromycin for injection has not been proven to be safe or effective in children or adolescents under the age of 16.

Administration

• Do not take antacids 2 hours before or after taking Azithrocin IV 500.
• Stop taking Azithrocin IV 500 and inform your doctor immediately if you develop an itchy rash, swelling of the face, throat or tongue or breathing difficulties while taking it.

Interaction

The absorption of azithromycin is slowed down by meals or antacids. In patients receiving ergot alkaloids, azithromycin should be avoided due to the possibility of ergotism from its interaction with the cytochrome P-450 system. When taking digoxin and cyclosporine together, care should be taken because macrolides increase their plasma concentrations. There haven't been any yet.

Contraindications

Patients who are particularly sensitive to azithromycin or any other macrolide antibiotic should not take azithromycin. It is not recommended to provide Azithromycin and ergot derivatives together. Patients with hepatic disorders should not use azithromycin.

Side Effects

Low incidences of adverse effects are associated with azithromycin's well-tolerance. The side effects, which are reversible once treatment is stopped, include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain (pain/cramps), flatulence, diarrhea, headaches, and skin rashes.

Pregnancy & Lactation

The pregnancy Category of Azithromycin is B. Animal reproduction studies have demonstrated that Azithromycin has no evidence of harm to the fetus. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies on pregnant women. Since animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, Azithromycin should be used during pregnancy only if adequate alternatives are not available. It is not known whether Azithromycin is secreted in breast milk. So, caution should be exercised when Azithromycin is administered to nursing women.

Precautions & Warnings

As with any antibiotic, observation for signs of superinfection with non-susceptible organisms, including fungi, is recommended. No dose adjustment is needed in patients with renal impairment.

Overdose Effects

There is no data on overdosage with Azithromycin. Typical symptoms of overdosage with macrolide antibiotics include hearing loss, severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Gastric lavage and general supportive measures are indicated.
