✔️ Side Effects of Tapazol 10

Common: Rash, hives, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, joint pain, muscle weakness, headache, itching, drowsiness, dizziness, taste changes, hair loss, swelling, jaundice, and enlarged lymph nodes.

Rare but Severe:

• Agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, aplastic anemia
• Hepatitis, hypoprothrombinemia, nephritis
• Drug fever, lupus-like reactions, periarteritis
• Insulin autoimmune syndrome (leading to hypoglycemia).

✔️ Dosage & Administration of Tapazol 10

Adults:

• Mild hyperthyroidism: 15 mg daily
• Moderate hyperthyroidism: 30–40 mg daily
• Severe hyperthyroidism: 60 mg daily
• Maintenance dose: 5–15 mg daily
• Doses are divided into three equal parts every 8 hours.

Pediatric Patients:

• Initial dose: 0.4 mg/kg per day, divided into three doses (every 8 hours).
• Maintenance dose: Approximately half of the initial dose.
• Preferred over propylthiouracil in children due to a lower risk of severe liver injury.

Administration Note:

• Take consistently concerning meals, as food may affect absorption.

✔️ Overdose Effects of Tapazol 10

• Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, joint pain, rash, drowsiness, headache, swelling.
• Severe Reactions: Aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis, liver toxicity, kidney issues, CNS effects.
• Management: Supportive care based on patient condition.

✔️ Drug Interactions

• Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin): May increase anticoagulant activity by inhibiting vitamin K. Monitor PT/INR levels.
• Beta-Blockers: Clearance may increase in hyperthyroid patients but reduce dosage when euthyroid state is achieved.
• Digitalis Glycosides & Theophylline: Dosage adjustments may be required when patients transition from hyperthyroidism to euthyroidism.

✔️ Contraindications

Allergy or hypersensitivity to Methimazole or any of its components.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Category D:

• Risk of congenital malformations, particularly in the first trimester.
• Alternative treatments are recommended for pregnant women, especially in early pregnancy.

Lactation:

• Methimazole is excreted in breast milk, but studies indicate no adverse effects on infants when maternal thyroid function is well-monitored.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

Fetal Risks:

• Methimazole crosses the placenta and may cause fetal goiter, hypothyroidism, or birth defects.
• If used in pregnancy, the lowest effective dose should be administered.

Agranulocytosis (Life-Threatening):

• Seek immediate medical attention for fever or sore throat.
• Drug should be discontinued if agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, vasculitis, hepatitis, or severe dermatitis occurs.

Liver Toxicity:

• Lower risk than propylthiouracil but can still occur.
• Discontinue treatment if liver enzyme levels exceed 3× the upper normal limit.

Hypothyroidism Risk:

• Monitor TSH and free T4 regularly to adjust dosage appropriately.

Surgical Considerations:

• Monitor prothrombin time (PT) due to potential bleeding risk before surgical procedures.
