Mechanism of Action
DHEA and its sulfate form (DHEAS):
- Act as neurosteroids influencing central nervous system activity
- Function as a noncompetitive antagonist of GABA receptors
- Act as a positive modulator of NMDA receptors
- Exhibit neuroprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antihypertensive properties
After oral administration, peak serum levels are typically reached within 60–480 minutes.

DHEA 25 mg contains dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), an endogenous steroid hormone precursor involved in the synthesis of androgens and estrogens. Although widely used as a supplement, strong long-term clinical evidence supporting its therapeutic use remains limited.

Dosage varies depending on indication:
- Adrenal insufficiency: 50 mg/day (replacement dose); up to 200 mg/day (pharmacologic dose)
- Anorexia nervosa: 100 mg/day for 6 months
- Diminished ovarian reserve: 50–75 mg/day (divided doses)
- Exercise-induced muscle damage: 100 mg/day for 5 days
- Major depressive disorder: 30–450 mg/day for 6–8 weeks
- Metabolic syndrome: 100 mg/day for 3 months
- Postmenopausal women: 25 mg/day (lower androgenic side effects), though ≥50 mg/day shows more clinical effect
Dosage should always be individualized under medical supervision.
