✔️ Dosage & Administration

Primary Hypercholesterolaemia and Mixed Hyperlipidaemia

Adults: Initial dose 10 mg once daily; may be titrated at intervals ≥4 weeks up to a maximum of 80 mg daily

Children (10–18 years): Starting dose 10 mg once daily; may be increased to a usual maximum of 20 mg daily

Familial Hypercholesterolaemia

Adults: Start with 10 mg daily; may be increased up to 40 mg, and if required, to a maximum of 80 mg daily (or 40 mg with an anion-exchange resin)

Children (10–18 years): Initial dose 10 mg daily; may be titrated up to 80 mg daily

Prevention of Cardiovascular Events

Adults: 10 mg once daily, adjusted according to lipid response

Geriatric Patients:
No significant differences in efficacy or safety compared with younger adults; however, elderly patients (≥65 years) may have an increased risk of myopathy and should be monitored closely.

Hepatic Impairment:
Contraindicated in patients with active liver disease or persistent unexplained transaminase elevations.

Pediatric Use:
Approved for use in children aged 10 years and above. Not indicated for children below 10 years of age.

✔️ Xerova 10 mg is generally well tolerated. Common adverse effects include:

Gastrointestinal disturbances (constipation, flatulence, dyspepsia, abdominal pain)

• Headache
• Back pain
• Myalgia and arthralgia
• Rash, asthenia, and mild infections

✔️ Interaction

The risk of myopathy is increased when atorvastatin is used concomitantly with cyclosporine, fibrates, erythromycin, azole antifungals, or niacin. Clinically significant interactions are uncommon with antihypertensive or antidiabetic agents. Close monitoring is advised when co-administered with digoxin, warfarin, oral contraceptives, erythromycin, colestipol, or antacids.

✔️ Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to atorvastatin or any component of the formulation

Active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevation of hepatic transaminases

History of serious adverse reactions to HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

Atorvastatin is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception. Therapy should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy occurs.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

Hepatic effects: Liver function tests should be conducted before initiation and periodically during therapy

Use with caution in patients with a history of liver disease or excessive alcohol intake

Discontinue treatment if a significant elevation of CPK occurs or if myopathy is suspected
