Valepsy Syrup 100ml

✔️ Valepsy is used to treat various types of epilepsy, including:

• Partial seizures
• Absence of seizures (petit mal)
• Generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal)
• Myoclonic seizures
• Atonic seizures
• Mixed seizures, including absence attacks
• Prophylaxis of febrile convulsions
• Prophylaxis of post-traumatic epilepsy

Additionally, it is used in the treatment of bipolar disorder and for the prophylaxis of migraine.

✔️ Composition:

• Sodium Valproate Tablets: Each enteric-coated tablet contains 200 mg of Sodium Valproate BP.
• Sodium Valproate Syrup: Each 5 ml syrup contains 200 mg of Sodium Valproate BP.
• Sodium Valproate Controlled-Release Tablets:
  • 200 mg tablet contains 133.2 mg Sodium Valproate & 58 mg Valproic acid.
  • 300 mg tablet contains 199.8 mg Sodium Valproate & 87 mg Valproic acid.
  • 500 mg tablet contains 333 mg Sodium Valproate & 145 mg Valproic acid.
• Sodium Valproate Injection: Each 5 ml injectable solution contains 500 mg of Sodium Valproate (equivalent to Valproic Acid 500 mg).

✔️ Side Effects: Valepsy Syrup

• Common: Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, sedation, ataxia, tremor, rash, alopecia, increased appetite.
• Hepatic effects: Elevated liver enzymes in plasma, potential for fulminant hepatitis, particularly in children under 2 years or those on multiple antiepileptic drugs.
• Pancreatitis and hyperammonemia may also occur.

✔️ Dosage: Valepsy Syrup

Epilepsy:

• Adults: Start with 600 mg daily (divided doses), increasing by 200 mg/day at 3-day intervals up to a maximum of 2.5 g/day.
• Children (over 20 kg): Start with 400 mg daily, increasing to control seizures (max 35 mg/kg/day).
• Children (up to 20 kg): Start with 20 mg/kg/day in divided doses.

Febrile Convulsions: 20-30 mg/kg/day in divided doses.

Bipolar Disorder: Start with 600 mg daily in 2-3 divided doses; maintenance dose is 1000-2000 mg/day.

Migraine Prophylaxis: 400-600 mg daily, with some requiring 1000-1500 mg/day.

✔️ Interaction:

Sodium Valproate may inhibit drug metabolism and interact with medications like Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Warfarin, and Aspirin.

✔️ Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to Sodium Valproate or liver dysfunction.
• Not recommended for pregnant women or women of childbearing potential.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation:

• Pregnancy: Valproate is associated with neural tube defects (e.g., spina bifida) if taken during the first trimester. Women should be offered screening for α-fetoprotein levels.
• Lactation: Excreted in breast milk, but no significant risk to infants has been observed.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings:

• Monitor liver function before and during the first 6 months, especially for at-risk patients.
• Exercise caution in cases of renal impairment, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and systemic lupus erythematosus.
• Avoid sudden withdrawal of therapy, which could cause seizures.
