Daytime sedative: 30-120 mg/day in divided doses
Bedtime hypnotic: 100-320 mg
Anticonvulsant: 50-100 mg 2-3 times daily
Status epilepticus: 10-20 mg/kg IV

Children:

Preoperative: 1-3 mg/kg
Anticonvulsant: 1-6 mg/kg/day
Status epilepticus: 15-20 mg/kg IV

Interactions Avoid concurrent use with alcohol or other CNS depressants.

Known sensitivity to phenobarbital, latent porphyria.

✔️ Side Effects

Common: Somnolence Less common: Agitation, confusion, hyperkinesia, ataxia, CNS depression, nausea, constipation

✔️ Overdose Effects

Serious poisoning with doses over 1 gram, potential death with 2-10 grams. Requires immediate hospitalization.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

Category D: Risk to the fetus; caution advised during lactation.

✔️ Precautions

Risk of tolerance, dependence, caution in mentally depressed, suicidal, or drug-abuse history patients, and those with hepatic damage.
