Cazep 200 is an antiepileptic medication. It controls seizures or fits by decreasing the abnormal and excessive activity of the nerve cells in the brain.

✔️ Side Effects of Cazep 200mg Tablet

Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, ataxia, dry mouth, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, leucopenia, proteinuria, bradycardia, heart failure, and hypotension. Skin reactions, aplastic anemia, increased sun sensitivity, erythematous skin rash, and severe adverse reactions in the hemopoietic system, skin, and cardiovascular system may occur.

✔️ Pharmacology

Carbamazepine, the active ingredient in Cazep, reduces activity in the nucleus ventralis of the thalamus and decreases synaptic propagation of excitatory impulses. It limits the influx of sodium ions across cell membranes, which reduces neural discharge. Carbamazepine also stimulates the release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH), enhancing water reabsorption.

✔️ Dosage & Administration of Cazep 200mg Tablet

Epilepsy:

• Adults and children over 12 years: Start with 200 mg twice daily or 1 teaspoon four times daily (total 400 mg/day). Increase weekly by up to 200 mg/day until optimal response. Maintenance is typically 800-1200 mg daily.
• Children 12-15 years: Maximum daily dose is 1000 mg; up to 1200 mg for those over 15 years.
• Children 6-12 years: Start with 100 mg twice daily or 1/2 teaspoon four times daily (total 200 mg/day). Increase weekly by up to 100 mg/day. The maximum daily dose is 1000 mg. Maintenance is usually 400-800 mg daily.
• Children under 6 years: Start with 10-20 mg/kg/day, divided doses. Increase weekly to achieve optimal response. Maintenance is usually below 35 mg/kg daily. Plasma levels should be measured if the clinical response is not satisfactory.

Combination therapy: Carbamazepine can be used alone or with other anticonvulsants. It should be added gradually when combined with other treatments, except for phenytoin, which may need to be increased.

Trigeminal Neuralgia:

• Start with 100 mg twice daily or 1/2 teaspoon four times daily (total 200 mg/day). Increase by 200 mg/day in divided doses as needed for pain control. A maximum daily dose is 1200 mg. Maintenance is usually 400-800 mg daily. Every 3 months, attempts should be made to reduce the dose to the minimum effective level or discontinue the drug.

• Oral contraceptives: May cause galactorrhea within the first two months.
• Hepatic enzyme inducers: Such as phenytoin may increase the metabolism of Cazep, possibly requiring a dosage increase.

• Conditions like atrioventricular block, bone marrow depression, and hereditary blood disorders (porphyrias).
