Dermovate Ointment

✔️ Dermovate Ointment is used in the treatment of:

• Corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses
• Psoriasis (including scalp psoriasis and plaque-type psoriasis)
• Eczema
• Dermatitis (including allergic and contact forms)
• Vitiligo
• Alopecia areata
• Lichen sclerosus, lichen planus
• Mycosis fungoides
• Herpes labialis (as directed by a physician)

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy: Data on safety in pregnant women is limited. Prolonged use (>300g of potent corticosteroids during pregnancy) has been linked to low birth weight. Use only if clearly needed, on the smallest area possible, and for the shortest duration.

Lactation: It is unknown if clobetasol is excreted in breast milk. To minimize infant exposure, avoid applying to or near the nipple and areola.

✔️ Side Effects

• Thinning of skin
• Burning, irritation, itching, redness
• Local dryness or cracking
• Folliculitis, perioral dermatitis
• Striae (stretch marks), hypopigmentation
• Telangiectasia (visible small blood vessels)
• Skin atrophy, Cushing’s syndrome, adrenal suppression
• Hypertension, hyperglycemia, or diabetes from systemic absorption

If severe irritation or signs of infection occur, discontinue use and consult your doctor.

✔️ Pharmacology

Clobetasol propionate, the active ingredient in Dermovate Ointment, is a super-potent topical corticosteroid.
It works by:

Stabilizing leukocyte lysosomal membranes to prevent the release of destructive enzymes.

Reducing inflammatory cell migration and capillary permeability.

Suppressing histamine and kinin release.

Decreasing fibroblast proliferation and collagen formation, minimizing scar tissue development.
This results in a powerful anti-inflammatory and antipruritic (anti-itch) effect on affected skin areas.

✔️ Interaction

Concomitant use with CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir, itraconazole) can increase systemic corticosteroid exposure, enhancing the risk of side effects.
Inform your doctor of all medications and topical treatments you are using.

✔️ Dermovate Ointment should not be used in:

• Children under 12 years
• Acne vulgaris, rosacea, or perioral dermatitis
• Viral skin infections (e.g., herpes simplex, chickenpox)
• Skin ulcers or untreated bacterial or fungal infections
• Otitis externa with a perforated eardrum
• Hypersensitivity to clobetasol or other corticosteroids
• Scalp infections

✔️ Dosage & Administration

Adults:

Apply a thin layer to the affected area twice daily (every 12 hours) and rub in gently.

Do not exceed 50 g per week.

For scalp psoriasis: Apply to dry scalp once daily, leave for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

For plaque-type psoriasis: Apply twice daily for up to 2 weeks if the affected area is less than 10% of total body surface area.

Children:

Safety and efficacy are not established below 12 years.

For patients above 12 years, apply a thin layer twice daily, not exceeding 50 g/week.

Use only under close medical supervision and for short durations (≤5 days).

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

• Avoid prolonged or continuous use, especially in children, to prevent adrenal suppression.
• Use caution when applying near the eyes—accidental contact can cause glaucoma or cataracts.
• Do not use under occlusion (bandages) unless prescribed, as this increases systemic absorption.
• If treating psoriasis, medical supervision is essential due to risk of rebound flare or pustular psoriasis.
• The scalp formulation is flammable—keep away from flames and heat sources.
• For pregnant or lactating women, use only on the smallest affected area and for the shortest possible time.
