Lubiprostone is a chloride channel activator that increases intestinal fluid secretion, promoting bowel movements without affecting sodium and potassium levels in the blood. It activates ClC-2 channels on the intestinal lining, improving stool passage and relieving constipation symptoms.
Additionally, Lubiprostone restores the intestinal mucosal barrier by enhancing tight junction proteins. It acts locally in the intestines; symptom relief is usually observed within 24 hours.

- Chronic Idiopathic Constipation (CIC): 24 mcg twice daily with food and water.
- Opioid-induced constipation (OIC): 24 mcg twice daily with food and water.
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation (IBS-C): 8 mcg twice daily with food and water.
- Children & Adolescents: Safety and efficacy have not been studied in this group.
- Elderly Patients (>65 years): Effectiveness remains consistent with younger adults.
- Renal Impairment: Not studied in patients with kidney dysfunction.
- Hepatic Impairment: Dose adjustment is required for patients with moderate to severe liver impairment.
