✔️ How does

Lidocaine is a local anesthetic. It works by blocking the transmission of pain signals from the nerves to the brain. This helps to decrease the sensation of pain.

✔️ Quick Suggestions:

• Lidocaine is prescribed to relieve itching and pain caused by scrapes, burns, rashes, bites, and eczema.
• Apply it over the affected area with a clean fingertip, three to four times a day or as directed by your doctor.
• Do not apply it to broken or infected areas of skin, face, eyes, or eyelids unless instructed to by your doctor.
• Do not cover the area being treated with airtight dressings such as bandages unless directed by a doctor, as this may increase the risk of side effects.
• Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and nose. In case of accidental contact, rinse thoroughly with water.
• Consult your doctor if your skin condition has not improved after 2-4 weeks of treatment.
• Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

✔️ Pharmacology

Lidocaine works by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels in neuronal cell membranes. This inhibition disrupts sodium influx, impeding signal conduction and preventing action potential formation. Lidocaine binds more readily to sodium channels in their active state, causing faster neural blockage in rapidly firing neurons. This phenomenon is known as state-dependent blockage.

✔️ Dosage & Administration

Urethral Anesthesia:

• Adult male: 400 mg is needed for sufficient analgesia.
• Adult female: Inject 100–200 mg in small doses to fill the urethra completely. Wait a few minutes to achieve adequate anesthesia.

Endotracheal Intubation:

• Apply 100 mg of lubricant to the tube's surface just before insertion. Avoid getting the product inside the tube's lumen.

Endoscopy:

• For adequate analgesia, install 200–400 mg and apply a small amount to the instrument for lubrication. Adjust doses for children, elderly patients, and those who are physically incapacitated according to their age and health.

Note: Sterilize the applicator in boiling water for five minutes, cool it, and attach it to the tube before use. Slowly inject the jelly as needed. Remove the applicator after each use, and keep the tube tightly closed.

✔️ Interactions

Use with caution in patients taking antiarrhythmic medications like tocainide, as the toxic effects of lidocaine and these medications are cumulative.

✔️ Contraindications

Not recommended for patients with a history of hypersensitivity to amide-type local anesthetics.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

Lidocaine has been widely used during pregnancy with no obvious adverse effects, though safety evidence in human pregnancy is insufficient. If necessary during pregnancy, it can be used if no alternative is available. Lidocaine does enter breast milk, but in such small amounts that the child is rarely affected at therapeutic dose levels.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

• High absorption rates typically occur in mucous membranes and wound sites, particularly in the bronchial tree. Use cautiously in patients with traumatized mucosa and/or infections at the application site.
• Prescribed to treat eczema, burns, bites, rashes, and scrapes that cause itching and pain. Apply with a clean fingertip over the affected area three to four times per day, or as instructed by your doctor.
• Avoid applying to broken or infected skin, face, eyes, or eyelids unless directed by a doctor. Do not cover the treated area with airtight dressings like bandages without a doctor's prescription to prevent increased risk of side effects.
• Avoid contact with mouth, nose, and eyes. Rinse thoroughly with water if accidental contact occurs.
• Use with caution in patients with epilepsy, compromised cardiac health, bradycardia, impaired hepatic function, and severe shock.
• Topical anesthetics for the oropharynx may impair swallowing, raising the risk of aspiration.
• If your skin condition does not improve after 2-4 weeks of treatment, consult a doctor.
