Tamsulosin, a selective alpha1 adrenoceptor antagonist, targets alpha1 A receptors in the prostate, leading to smooth muscle relaxation. This improves urine flow rate and reduces BPH symptoms. It is well absorbed (90%) and binds extensively to plasma proteins (94%-99%). The half-life ranges from 9-13 hours in healthy individuals and up to 15 hours in BPH patients.

✔️ Dosage & Administration:

Initial dose: 0.4mg (1 capsule) once daily, taken after dinner.
If necessary, the dose can be increased to 0.8mg (2 capsules) after 2-4 weeks.
If treatment is interrupted, restart with 0.4mg dose.

Take the capsule whole, with a glass of water, and avoid chewing.

✔️ Side Effects:

Common: Dizziness, abnormal ejaculation
Less common: Headache, weakness, postural hypotension, palpitations

✔️ Interactions:

Cimetidine can increase plasma levels, and furosemide can decrease them, but the levels remain within the normal range.
No significant interactions with atenolol, enalapril, or nifedipine.

✔️ Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to Tamsulosin
Orthostatic hypotension or severe liver insufficiency

Patients should avoid activities that could cause injury, like driving or operating heavy machinery, if they experience dizziness or weakness.

Not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding
