✔️ Dosage & Administration

Adults & adolescents (≥15 years)

• Asthma or seasonal allergic rhinitis: 10 mg once daily

Pediatric dosing:

• 6–14 years: 5 mg once daily
• 2–5 years: 4 mg once daily (chewable tablet)
• 6 months–5 years: 4 mg oral granules once daily (directly into the mouth or mixed with cold water or soft food)

Montelukast has been proven safe and effective in children aged 6 months to 14 years.

No dosage adjustments required for:

• Elderly patients
• Patients with renal impairment
• Patients with mild to moderate liver dysfunction

✔️ Side Effects

Common: Headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, upper respiratory infections.
Uncommon: Drowsiness, dizziness, irritability, behavioral changes, muscle aches, seizures, edema, sleep disturbances.
Rare: Hallucinations, memory impairment, liver disorders, palpitations, suicidal ideation, eosinophilic conditions, angioedema.

✔️ Interaction

Aeron FT can be used alongside other asthma medications without increased risk of adverse effects. It does not significantly alter the pharmacokinetics of drugs like theophylline, warfarin, digoxin, oral contraceptives, or corticosteroids.
However, enzyme inducers such as phenobarbital may reduce Montelukast levels by around 40%. Although no dosage change is necessary, appropriate monitoring is recommended when co-administered with potent CYP450 inducers like rifampin.

✔️ Contraindications

Aeron FT is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to Montelukast or any of its components.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

Animal studies show that Montelukast crosses the placenta. Although no well-controlled studies exist in pregnant women, it should only be used if necessary. Caution is advised during breastfeeding, as drug excretion in human milk is unknown.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

• Not for emergency treatment of acute asthma attacks or status asthmaticus
• Should not replace inhaled or oral corticosteroids abruptly
• Not to be used alone for exercise-induced bronchospasm
• Patients sensitive to aspirin should continue avoiding NSAIDs, as Montelukast does not fully prevent related bronchoconstriction
