✔️ How does Alervil Syrup work?

It works by blocking the action of a chemical messenger called 'histamine', which is responsible for causing allergic reactions. Thereby Alervil Syrup treats allergic conditions.

✔️ Side Effects of Alervil Syrup

• Common: Sedation, dizziness, nausea, dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, blurred vision.
• Rare: Blood dyscrasias, convulsions, hallucinations.

✔️ Overdosage of Alervil Syrup

Consult your doctor if you experience any unusual symptoms such as agitation and convulsions, especially in children, and hallucinations, restlessness, and disorientation in adults.

✔️ Manage:

• Allergic conditions (such as hay fever, angioneurotic edema, drug rashes, serum sickness, allergic conjunctivitis, and food allergy)
• Conditions of the respiratory tract which involve increased secretions (vasomotor rhinitis, acute rhinitis)
• Itching skin conditions (such as neurodermatitis, lichen planus, eczema, acute and chronic urticaria, pruritus in jaundice and diabetes, pruritis of the anus or genitals, radiation sickness)
• Motion sickness, nausea, vomiting, and vertigo due to Meniere’s disease (disease of the inner ear) and other disturbances

✔️ Pharmacology

Pheniramine works by competing with histamine for the H1 receptor and acts as an inverse agonist once it binds. This action leads to a decrease in H1 receptor activity, which in turn reduces itching, vasodilation, and capillary leakage, ultimately leading to less redness and swelling. This effect is particularly evident in the suppression of the histamine-induced wheal (swelling) and flare (vasodilation) response.

In the central nervous system (CNS), the inverse agonism of the H1 receptor by pheniramine is responsible for the sedative effects commonly associated with first-generation antihistamines. Additionally, pheniramine's binding to H4 receptors and its inverse agonism at these sites may also help reduce itching by counteracting inflammation.

✔️ Dosage & Administration of Alervil Syrup

Syrup (15 mg/5 ml): For children aged 1-3 years, half a measuring spoonful 2-3 times daily; for those aged 4-12 years, 1 measuring spoonful 2-3 times daily; for adults and young people, 1-2 measuring spoonfuls twice or three times daily after meals. Your doctor or nurse will give you this medicine. Kindly do not self-administer. 

✔️ Interaction

• MAO inhibitors may prolong and intensify the anticholinergic effects of pheniramine.
• Alcohol and other CNS depressants may enhance adverse CNS effects.

✔️ Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to pheniramine or any ingredient in the formulation.
• Symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy.
• Concurrent MAO-inhibitor therapy.
• Not recommended for newborns and premature infants.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Category C: Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

• May cause drowsiness; caution is advised when driving or operating machinery.
• Avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants.
• Use with caution in patients with conditions such as prostatic hypertrophy, narrow-angle glaucoma, asthma, or severe cardiovascular disease.

• Store in a cool, dry place, protected from light.
• Keep out of reach of children.
