Pharmacology
The water-soluble vitamin mecobalamin is the form of vitamin B12 that is neurologically active. It functions as a cofactor in the enzyme methionine synthase, which moves methyl groups from homocysteine to methionine in order to regenerate it. It increases nucleic acid synthesis in the bone marrow as well as erythrocyte maturation and division to increase erythrocyte production in anemia.
Dosage & Administration of Methicol
Tablet: The usual adult dosage is 500 mcg tablet three times daily. The dosage should be adjusted according to the age of the patient and the severity of the symptoms.
Interaction
Neomycin, aminosalicylic acid, H2-blockers, and colchicine all reduced GI tract absorption. Oral contraceptives reduce serum concentrations. Reduced effects of parenteral chloramphenicol on anemia.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in this product.
Side Effects of Methicol
Mecobalamin is generally well tolerated. However, GI discomfort (including anorexia, nausea, or diarrhea) and rash may occur with Mecobalamin treatment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
It is not advised to use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
If there is no reaction after a specific amount of time, the drug should not be administered for months.
Storage Conditions
Store at room temperature for oral use. Keep moisture and light at bay.
Store parenteral at room temperature. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight.
