How does Unix 5% Cream work?

Unix 5% Cream works by killing microorganisms that cause scabies (an itchy skin condition). It is also effective in paralyzing and killing the lice and their eggs.

• Tingling and numbness of the skin
• Burning or stinging sensation

Quick Suggestions:

• Permethrin is prescribed for the treatment of scabies( a condition where tiny insects infest and irritate your skin).
• It may also be used for the treatment of head lice.
• It should be used as per the dose and duration suggested by your doctor.
• If the condition persists after 14 days of treatment then the doctor may suggest another treatment.
• Apply a thin layer of this medicine all over the body and leave it for 8-14 hours before taking a bath or shower. 
• Avoid getting it in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If this happens, rinse with water immediately.

Indication

Unix 5% Cream has two primary uses:

Scabies: Scabies is a skin condition caused by an infestation of mites that burrow into the skin, lay eggs, and cause itching, redness, and skin irritation. Unix 5% Cream is used in the treatment of scabies to kill the mites and their eggs, thereby relieving the associated symptoms.

Lice Infestation: This cream is also used to treat lice infestations on the scalp and other parts of the skin. It effectively kills lice, making it easier to remove them and prevent their spread.

Pharmacology

Permethrin cream is a topical medication used for the treatment of scabies. It contains Permethrin, which is a pyrethroid compound. The mechanism of action involves its effect on nerve cell membranes by disrupting the sodium channel current responsible for membrane polarization. This disruption results in delayed repolarization of the affected cells, ultimately leading to paralysis of the scabies mites.

In terms of pharmacokinetics, Permethrin is intended for topical use only, and there is limited available data on systemic exposure or kinetics following its application to the skin. When applied to the skin, less than 0.5 percent of the Permethrin is absorbed during the initial 48 hours. Any absorbed Permethrin is rapidly metabolized, likely in the liver, through ester hydrolysis. The metabolites are primarily eliminated in the urine. The limited systemic absorption of Permethrin makes it a suitable choice for topical treatment of scabies with minimal risk of systemic side effects.

Dosage & Administration of Unix 5% Cream

The recommended duration of treatment for Permethrin cream varies depending on the age group:

• Adults and children over 12 years: Apply a full tube.
• Children aged 6-12 years: Apply up to 1⁄2 of a tube.
• Children aged 1-5 years: Apply up to 1⁄4 of a tube.
• Children aged 2 months to 1 year: Apply up to ⅛ of a tube.
• Children less than 2 months: The dose is not established.

Before applying Permethrin cream, ensure that the skin is clean, cool, and dry. Avoid taking a hot shower or bath just before application.

For adults and children over 2 years: Apply the cream to the entire body from the neck down, gently rubbing it into the skin until the cream is absorbed. Ensure that all skin surfaces are covered, including areas between the fingers and toes, under the nails, and on the soles of the feet.

For babies under 2 years: Apply the cream to the face, neck, ears, and scalp, excluding the area immediately around the eyes and mouth.

Leave the cream on for a minimum of 8 hours before washing it off. Reapply to any areas that may have been washed during the 8-hour treatment period, such as after washing hands. If necessary, Permethrin cream should be reapplied after 7 days based on your doctor's advice.

Interaction

The use of corticosteroids to treat eczema-like symptoms should be avoided before using permethrin because it increases the risk of aggravating the scabies infestation by lowering the immunological response to the mite.

Contraindications

Permethrin is not recommended for people who have a known hypersensitivity to any pyrethroid or permethrin component. Nurses who apply permethrin on a regular basis should wear gloves to protect their hands from discomfort.

Pregnancy & Lactation

In the absence of specific studies on pregnant women, its use in pregnancy should only follow medical advice. It is not known whether permethrin is excreted in human milk so it should not be used in nursing mothers.

Precautions & Warnings

Pruritus, edema, and erythema are common symptoms of scabies infestation. Permethrin treatment may temporarily aggravate these symptoms. Patients should be instructed to avoid contact with their eyes while applying the cream and to flush their eyes with water immediately if the cream goes into their eyes.
