Indications:

E-Cap is used as a dietary supplement when the amount of vitamin E taken in the diet is not enough.

Vitamin E (Tocopherol) Test (Alpha Tocopherol, Vitamin E1)

Vitamin E comprises eight molecules categorized as Tocopherols and Tocotrienols, each further divided into alpha (α), beta (β), gamma (γ), and delta (δ) vitamins. α-Tocopherol is considered the primary vitamin. Known for its antioxidant properties, vitamin E functions as a signaling molecule and helps protect cells from damage. It is fat-soluble, naturally found in various foods, and available as a dietary supplement.

Vitamin E Production Method: High-vacuum unobstructed path distillation of soybean oil separates a Tocopherol concentrate, initially low in vitamin E potency. The potency is increased by halo ethylating and reducing the product to alpha-tocopherol.

Common Uses of Vitamin E:

  • Vitamin E Deficiency: Effective in preventing and treating deficiency when taken orally.
  • Movement Disorder (Ataxia): Used in treating ataxia, a genetic movement disorder causing severe vitamin E deficiency.
  • Blood Disorder (Beta-thalassemia): Benefits children with beta-thalassemia and vitamin E deficiency.

Chemical Assay Method: A precise method for vitamin E assay in animal tissues involves homogenization, extraction, and molecular distillation for concentration. The same process is applied to foods with slight modifications.

Clinical Specimen and Reference Range:

  • Specimen: Serum (protected from light)
  • Volume: 0.7 mL
  • Container: Red-top or gel-barrier tube; amber plastic transport tube. If unavailable, cover the standard transport tube with aluminum foil. Reference range: 5.4 - 40 ng/ml for all age groups.
Pharmacology

Vitamin E, an antioxidant, protects polyunsaturated fatty acids and other oxygen-sensitive substances from oxidation. Deficiency can lead to issues like agitation, edema, thrombosis, and hemolytic anemia in preterm infants. In adults and children with low tocopherol concentrations, oxidative agents are linked to various complications.
