✔️ Side Effects:
- Common side effects include local irritation. There may also be ocular or ototoxicity (toxicity affecting the ears or hearing).
✔️ Pharmacology
- Oxytetracycline, the active ingredient in Renamycin, inhibits bacterial cell growth by interfering with translation. It binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit and prevents aminoacyl tRNA from binding to the A site of the ribosome, a reversible process. Oxytetracycline is lipophilic, allowing it to easily penetrate cell membranes or pass through porin channels in bacterial membranes.
✔️ Dosage & Administration:
- As Eye Ointment: Apply every 2 hours for acute eye infections.
- As Ear Ointment: Apply a small amount to the external auditory meatus (ear canal) 2-4 times daily
✔️ Interaction:
- Antacids containing aluminum, calcium, magnesium, zinc, or iron salts can affect the absorption of oxytetracycline. In long-term treatment, tetracycline drugs may inhibit plasma prothrombin activity, necessitating a potential reduction in the dose of concomitant anticoagulants. Some cases of pregnancy or breakthrough bleeding have been associated with the simultaneous use of tetracycline or oxytetracycline and oral contraceptives.

- Hypersensitivity to the medication.
✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation:
- The safety of Renamycin in pregnant women is not established. There is limited human data, but potential benefits may outweigh the risks in certain situations. Animal studies haven't shown fetal risk, but there are no well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
✔️ Precautions & Warnings:
- Prolonged use should be avoided, and Renamycin should not be used in cases of a perforated eardrum.
✔️ Storage Conditions:
- Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture, and keep out of the reach of children.
