How does Rifaxin 200mg Tablet work?

Rifaxin 200mg Tablet works by interfering with some vital processes in the bacterial cell and stopping the growth and multiplication of the microorganism.

Side Effects of Rifaxin 200mg Tablet

Common side effects include flatulence, headache, abdominal pain, rectal tenesmus, defecation urgency, nausea, constipation, pyrexia, and vomiting. Rare reactions include anaphylaxis, angioneurotic edema, and exfoliative dermatitis.

• Rifaximin reduces the risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy (HE) recurrence in patients with liver disease.
• It may cause reddish discoloration of urine. This is normal and harmless.

Indication of Rifaxin 200mg Tablet

Rifaxin is indicated for:

1. Treatment of traveler's diarrhea caused by noninvasive strains of E. coli.
2. Reduction in the risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy.
3. Bacterial overgrowth of irritable bowel syndrome.

Pharmacology

Rifaximin, a semisynthetic rifamycin-based non-systemic antibiotic, inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis by acting on the beta-subunit of DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. It exerts bactericidal action against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, both aerobic and anaerobic.

Dosage & Administration of Rifaxin 200mg Tablet

• Traveler's Diarrhea (patients ≥12 years): 200 mg three times daily for 3 days.
• Hepatic Encephalopathy (patients ≥18 years): 550 mg twice daily.
• Bacterial Overgrowth of Irritable Bowel Syndrome: 400 mg three times daily for 10 days or 550 mg three times daily for 14 days. Can be taken with or without food.
• Renal Impairment: Pharmacokinetics not studied in patients with impaired renal function.
• Hepatic Impairment: Systemic exposure is markedly elevated in patients with hepatic impairment.

Take Rifaximin as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine.

Interaction

In vitro studies suggest that Rifaxin may induce CYP3A4, but at recommended dosages in patients with normal liver function, CYP3A4 induction is not expected.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Rifaximin or rifamycin antimicrobial agents, or any components of the product.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy category C. It's unknown whether Rifaximin is excreted in human milk.

Precautions & Warnings

• Rifaxin may not be effective in patients with diarrhea complicated by fever and/or blood in stools.
• Discontinue therapy if symptoms worsen or persist for more than 24-48 hours.
• Consider pseudomembranous colitis in patients presenting with diarrhea after antibiotic administration.
• No specific information is available. Discontinue Rifaxin, treat symptomatically, and provide supportive measures if an overdose occurs.
