Description:

Rifaximin is used to treat:

  1. Infectious traveler's diarrhea caused by E. coli bacteria (in adults and children above 12 years).
  2. Hepatic encephalopathy (decreased brain function due to liver disease).
  3. Irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D).

Rifaximin, an antibiotic, works on the bowel and prevents the spread of infections caused by the loss of beneficial gut bacteria. It helps relieve abdominal pain and diarrhea.

  • Do not use Rifaximin in patients with diarrhea complicated by fever or blood in the stool, and diarrhea due to pathogens other than E. coli.
  • Rifaximin is not recommended for children due to a lack of efficacy and safety data.
  • Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
  • Inform your doctor if you have any allergies, or kidney or liver problems before taking Rifaximin. Do not take it for more than 3 days without a prescription. Avoid Rifaximin if pregnant or breastfeeding, and inform your doctor about all medications and health conditions.

No, Rifaxin may interact with warfarin, affecting its activity and effectiveness. Inform your doctor if you are taking warfarin before starting Rifaxin, as your doctor may need to adjust the warfarin dose to maintain the proper blood-thinning effect and prevent any potential drug interactions.

Rifaxin is bactericidal and works by killing harmful bacteria, such as E. coli, that cause infections in the gut or intestine. By eliminating these bacteria, Rifaxin helps in treating and preventing the spread of infections and diarrhea with abdominal pain.

It is recommended to complete the course of Rifaxin even if you feel better. Stopping the antibiotic prematurely may lead to severe infection and antibiotic resistance, where antibiotics become ineffective against specific bacterial infections.

Yes, Rifaxin can be taken orally with or without food, accompanied by a glass of water. Follow your doctor's prescription regarding the exact dosage and timing.

The duration of Rifaxin treatment depends on the condition being treated. For traveler's diarrhea, it is generally prescribed for 3 days, while for irritable bowel syndrome, it may be prescribed for 14 days. Follow your doctor's instructions regarding the duration of treatment.

Do not take Rifaxin without a doctor's prescription. Self-medication can lead to antibiotic resistance, making it difficult to treat bacterial infections in the future. Take Rifaximin only as prescribed by a healthcare professional.

Rifaximin usually does not cause weight gain. If you experience unexpected weight gain while taking Rifaximin, consult your doctor to determine the underlying cause.

Rifaxin may affect blood tests and liver function tests by increasing liver enzyme levels. Inform the person conducting the tests or your doctor that you are taking Rifaximin to ensure accurate result

In cases of liver disease, Rifaximin helps by reducing the growth of bacteria in the intestine, which decreases the load of toxins entering the body. This can alleviate symptoms and prevent complications associated with abnormal brain function due to toxin accumulation.
