Indications

Vertina Plus is a combination medication that is used to treat vertigo and motion sickness. It alleviates nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness, and other vertigo symptoms. Vertina Plus can be taken with or without food and for as long as the doctor prescribes.

Pharmacology

Meclizine is an antihistamine with a piperazine derivative. It has anti-emetic, anticholinergic, and antihistaminic properties. It reduces the sensitivity of the labyrinthine apparatus. The action could be mediated by neural pathways to the vomiting center from the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ), peripheral nerve pathways, the VC, or other CNS regions (VC). Pyridoxine is vitamin B-6. It was included to enhance the anti-emetic effects and as a dietary supplement.

Dosage & Administration

• Adults and children aged 12 and up:
• Nausea and vomiting: 25-50 mg daily, or as prescribed by a doctor.
• Take a 25-50 mg dose 1 hour before travel to prevent motion sickness. For the duration of the journey, the dose can be repeated every 24 hours.
• Radiation sickness: 50 mg taken 2-12 hours before radiation treatment.
• Vertigo: 25-100 mg daily, divided.
• Prevention of nausea and vomiting caused by the emergency contraceptive pill (ECP): 25-50 mg, 1 hour before the first ECP dose; repeat if necessary within 24 hours.

This medication's safety and effectiveness in children under the age of 12 have not been established.

Interaction

Concurrent use of Ethanol or other CNS depressant drugs such as Benzodiazepines, Barbiturates, Tricyclic antidepressants, opiate agonists, skeletal muscle relaxants, and antihistamines might enhance Meclizine's CNS depressive effects. Concurrent use of other anticholinergics can enhance Meclizine's anticholinergic effects. Meclizine can enhance digoxin absorption by reducing gastrointestinal motility.

Contraindications

Meclizine Hydrochloride and Pyridoxine Hydrochloride are not recommended for people who are allergic to these substances.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Category B Pregnancy. Human investigations on a large scale have not revealed any negative prenatal consequences. According to current evidence, Meclizine has the lowest risk of teratogenicity and is the medication of the first choice for treating nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. The safety of using it in a nursing mother has not been proven.

Precautions & Warnings

Patients should be informed that Meclizine Hydrochloride may impair their ability to undertake dangerous tasks that require mental awareness or physical coordination (e.g., operating machinery, or driving a motor vehicle). Patients should abstain from alcoholic drinks while using this medication. Because of the possibility of anticholinergic effects, this medication should be taken with caution in individuals with asthma, glaucoma, or prostate enlargement.
