Indication of Nitoxin 500

Nitoxin is an antiparasitic medication used in the treatment of diarrhea and worm infections. It inhibits the growth of the parasite, thus treating the infection.

Pharmacology

itazoxanide, the active ingredient in Nitoxin, is a synthetic antiprotozoal agent administered orally. It interferes with the Pyruvate Ferredoxin Oxido Reductase (PFOR) enzyme-dependent electron transfer reaction, essential for the anaerobic energy metabolism of the protozoa. Nitazoxanide and its metabolites, nitazoxanide, inhibit the growth of sporozoites and oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum and trophozoites of Giardia lamblia in vitro.

Dosage & Administration of Nitoxin 500

Adult Dose: Oral Giardiasis; Cryptosporidiosis Adult: 500 mg every 12 hr for 3 days.

Child Dose: Oral Giardiasis; Cryptosporidiosis Child: 1-3 yr: 100 mg(5 ml) every 12 hr; 4-11 yr: 200 mg(10ml) every 12 hr; >12 yr: 500 mg every 12 hr. All doses are to be taken for 3 days.

Take Nitoxin as directed by your doctor, swallow it whole with food, and do not chew or crush it

Interaction

Nitoxin may interact with other drugs highly bound to plasma proteins. Caution is advised when administering Nitoxin concurrently with such drugs, especially those with a narrow therapeutic index.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Nitazoxanide is classified as US FDA pregnancy category B. While there are limited studies in pregnant women, caution should be exercised, and Nitazoxanide should be used during pregnancy only if needed. Nitazoxanide is excreted in human milk, so caution is also advised during lactation.

Precautions & Warnings

• Nitoxin should be used with caution in patients with hepatic & biliary disease and renal disease.
