Neofloxin 500mg Tablet works by stopping the action of a bacterial enzyme called DNA-gyrase. It destabilizes DNA and prevents the growth of bacteria, thereby killing them.

Indication of Neofloxin 500mg Tablet

Neofloxin 500mg Tablet is used for the treatment of respiratory tract infections, ear infection, urinary tract infection, sexually transmitted diseases, intestinal infections, stomach infection, skin infection, bone and joint infection, digestive system related infections, infections associated with surgeries 

Pharmacology

Ciprofloxacin is a synthetic fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It is effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis by binding to the bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are responsible for DNA supercoiling.

Dosage & Administration of Neofloxin 500mg Tablet

Neofloxin 500mg Tablet contains ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections in adults and children.

Adult Dose:

• Urinary Tract Infection:
  • Acute uncomplicated: 250 mg twice daily for 3 days
  • Mild/Moderate: 250 mg twice daily for 7 to 14 days
  • Severe/Complicated: 500 mg twice daily for 7 to 14 days
• Lower Respiratory Tract Infection:
  • Mild/Moderate: 500 mg twice daily for 7 to 14 days
  • Severe/Complicated: 750 mg twice daily for 7 to 14 days
• Skin and Skin Structure Infection:
  • Mild/Moderate: 500 mg twice daily for 7 to 14 days
  • Severe/Complicated: 750 mg twice daily for 7 to 14 days
• Bone and Joint Infection:
  • Mild/Moderate: 500 mg twice daily for 4 to 6 weeks
  • Severe/Complicated: 750 mg twice daily for 4 to 6 weeks
• Other infections: Refer to doctor's guidelines

Child Dose:

• PO (by mouth): 20-40 mg/kg/day, max 1.5 g/day, q12h
• IV (intravenous): 20-30 mg/kg/day, max 1.2 g/day, q12h
• Dosages vary based on the type of infection and the age of the child

Renal Dose:

• Dosage adjustment required based on the patient's creatinine clearance (CrCl)
• Various dosages and frequency adjustments for different levels of renal impairment and dialysis patients

Interaction

Ciprofloxacin should not be combined with magnesium or aluminum antacids, sucralfate, or any calcium, iron, or zinc-containing medications. Ciprofloxacin can be administered two hours after or six hours before these medications. Ciprofloxacin should not be taken with milk or other dairy products because its absorption may be greatly reduced. However, when consumed as part of a meal, dietary calcium has no effect on Ciprofloxacin absorption.

Contraindications

Patients who have a known hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones should avoid it.

Pregnancy & Lactation

In pregnant women, there are no sufficient and well-controlled trials. Only if the possible benefit outweighs the danger to the fetus and mother should Ciprofloxacin be used during pregnancy. Human milk contains ciprofloxacin, which is excreted. Ciprofloxacin should not be taken during lactation due to the risk of articular injury.

Precautions & Warnings

Ciprofloxacin patients should be encouraged to drink plenty of water. It should be used with caution in people who have suspected or established CNS problems, such as epilepsy, or other factors that predispose them to seizures and convulsions. In patients with known QT prolongation, hypokalemia should be avoided.

Storage Conditions

Store in a dry area at a temperature of not more than 30°C. Light and dampness should be avoided. Keep out of children's reach.
