Pharmacology

Acetylcysteine is a mucolytic drug that decreases the viscosity of secretions by causing disulfide links in mucoproteins to rupture. It also has an antisecretory action. As a result, the respiratory ducts are cleared, making breathing easier. Acetylcysteine possesses anti-oxidant capabilities as a result of its reaction with free radicals and as a precursor to glutathione, an essential intra-, and extracellular antioxidant. It neutralizes exogenous and endogenous oxidants, which act as pathogens in respiratory inflammations, by providing anti-oxidant action.
