How Melphin Works

Melphin is an antihelmintic drug. It works by binding to worm muscle and nerve cells, paralyzing them. The worms are unable to move and are naturally eliminated in the stool.

• Melphin can be harmful to a developing baby. It should not be taken while pregnant or breastfeeding. While taking Melphin, use birth control to avoid pregnancy.
• Before you start taking this medicine and on a regular basis, your doctor may check your blood counts and liver function.
• Stay away from people who are sick or have infections. If you notice any signs of infection, contact your doctor.
• Even if you begin to feel better, do not skip doses and complete the prescribed course. Stopping it too soon may increase your risk of infection.

Indications of Melphin

Melphin is used to treat pinworm, roundworm, and hookworm infections of the intestine. Pyrantel belongs to the anthelmintic class of drugs. It works by paralyzing the worms, allowing the body to naturally remove them in the stool.
Pyrantel Pamoate is indicated for the treatment of Ascaris lumbricoides, Enterobius vermicularis, Ancylostoma duodenal/Necator americanus, and Trichostrongylus infestations.

Pharmacology

Pyrantel pamoate acts as a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent, causing helminth contraction followed by paralysis. As a result, the worm will "lose its grip" on the intestinal wall and be passed out of the system naturally. Because Pyrantel is poorly absorbed by the host's intestine, the small dosage of medication used has no effect on the host. Spastic (tetanic) paralyzing agents, particularly pyrantel pamoate, can cause complete intestinal obstruction in patients with a high worm burden. This obstruction is typically in the form of a worm impaction, which occurs when a small but heavily parasitized animal is treated and attempts to pass a large number of dislodged worms at once. Worms are typically passed in the normal stool or with diarrhea, straining, and the occasional vomiting.

Dosage & Administration of Melphin

• Pyrantel Pamoate is administered orally at any time, regardless of food or beverage consumption.
• To treat infestations caused by the aforementioned parasites, a single dose of 11 mg/kg body weight, up to a maximum of 1 gm, should be administered.
• In the case of Pinworm, it is often prudent to repeat the dose after a 2-week interval.

Interaction

Potentially Fatal: Mutually antagonistic with piperazine.

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to pyrantel or any ingredient in the formulation.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pyrantel Pamoate is typically contraindicated in pregnant women because it has not been investigated in this population. Pyrantel Pamoate should not be given to children under the age of one year.

Precautions & Warnings

• It might be harmful to a developing child. Melphin should not be taken if you are pregnant or nursing. Use birth control while taking Melphin to avoid getting pregnant.
• Before you start taking Melphin on a regular basis while you're receiving treatment, your doctor may check your blood counts and liver function.
• Stay away from those who are ill or infected. If you notice any infection-related symptoms, tell your doctor.
• Use with caution in patients with preexisting liver dysfunction.
• Even if you begin to feel better, do not skip doses; instead, follow the prescribed course to the end. If you stop it too soon, you run the risk of getting an additional infection.
• Since Pyrantel Pamoate and Piperazine seem to be incompatible with one another, they shouldn't be taken together. Pyrantel Pamoate should be kept out of the reach of children.
