Uses of Exiben

• Pneumonia, Pharyngitis, Typhoid fever, Susceptible infections, Sinusitis, Otitis media, Tonsillitis, Soft tissue infections, Respiratory tract infections, Acute Exacerbations of Chronic bronchitis, Gonococcal urethritis, Acute bronchitis. 

How Exiben works?

• Inhibits bacterial cell wall formation, leading to bacterial cell death.

Side Effects of Exiben

• Nausea
• Stomach pain
• Indigestion
• Diarrhea

Quick Suggestions:

• Take Exiben regularly and complete the full course.
• Take with food to avoid an upset stomach.
• Diarrhea may occur, but it should stop after completing the course.
• Avoid alcohol during Exiben treatment.
• Discontinue and inform your doctor if you experience rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing.

Pharmacology

• Cefixime is a third-generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic.
• Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
• Interferes with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall.
• Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzymes.

Dosage & Administration of Exiben

Administration:

• May be taken with or without food. May be taken with food or milk to reduce GI discomfort.

Adult Dose:

• Acute Bronchitis & Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis, Otitis Media, Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis, Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections Adult: 200 or 400 mg daily as a single dose or in two divided doses. Gonorrhea: 400 mg as a single dose. Typhoid fever: 20 mg/kg body weight daily in two divided doses. The usual treatment is 7 days, up to 14 days for severe infections.

Child Dose:

• Varies with age and condition. Typically, 8 mg/kg/day if <50 kg q12–24h. Typhoid Fever: 15-20 mg/kg/day PO divided q12hr for 7-14 days; not to exceed 400 mg/day.

Renal Dose:

• Dose reduction is necessary for renal impairment. Max: 200 mg daily if CrCl <20 ml/min.

Interaction

• Increases in prothrombin times were noted in some patients.
• Caution is advised in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy.

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Limited data; use during pregnancy only if needed.
• Not known if Cefixime is excreted in human milk; caution during lactation.

Precautions & Warnings

• Administer with caution to patients hypersensitive to other drugs.
• Use cautiously in penicillin-sensitive patients due to partial cross-allergenicity.
• Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function.
• Avoid in pregnancy or nursing mothers unless essential.

• Keep below 30ºC, protected from light and moisture.
• Keep out of the reach of children.
