Malassezia (formerly Pittosporum) yeast has been linked to diseases such as pityriasis Versicolor (localized), seborrheic dermatitis, and pityriasis capitis. Ketoconazole 2 percent shampoo is used to treat and prevent Malassezia (previously known as Pityrosporum) infections (dandruff).

Pharmacology

Ketoconazole 2 percent shampoo is a broad-spectrum imidazole-dioxolane synthetic antifungal drug that alters cell membrane permeability to prevent the in vitro development of the following common dermatophytes and yeasts: Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton tonsurans, Microsporum canis, Microsporum Baudouin, Microsporum gypseum, and Epiderm (Pityrosporum orbiculare).
