  • Stop taking the drug and call your doctor at once if you have: joint pain, weakness or tired feeling, weight loss, stomach pain, chills, fever, increased urge to urinate, painful or difficult urination, severe pain in your side or lower back, blood in your urine.
Indications:

Ascorbic acid, also known as vitamin C, is utilized to prevent or address insufficient levels of vitamin C in individuals with inadequate dietary intake. For those maintaining a normal diet, additional ascorbic acid is usually unnecessary. Insufficient vitamin C levels can lead to a condition called scurvy, characterized by symptoms like rash, muscle weakness, joint pain, fatigue, and tooth loss.

Vitamin C holds a crucial role in maintaining various aspects of bodily health. It is essential for the well-being of skin, cartilage, teeth, bones, and blood vessels. Furthermore, vitamin C acts as an antioxidant, playing a vital role in protecting the body's cells from damage.

Pharmacology

Vitamin C, a water-soluble vitamin, is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is widely distributed throughout the body. It plays a crucial role in biological oxidations and reductions associated with cellular respiration. Vitamin C is essential for the formation of collagen and intracellular materials.

When dietary intake is inadequate and the body's increased demand is not met, a deficiency in vitamin C may develop. This insufficiency can lead to a well-defined condition known as scurvy. Scurvy is characterized by symptoms such as capillary fragility, bleeding (especially from small blood vessels and the gums), anemia, abnormalities in cartilage and bone, and impaired wound healing—all of which result from the deficiency of vitamin C.

Dosage & Administration of Ascobex 250mg Chewable Tablet

Oral Administration:

  • Prevention of Scurvy: 1 tablet daily.
  • Treatment of Scurvy: 1-2 tablets daily; the dose may be increased based on the severity of the condition.
  • Reduction of Stroke Risk in the Elderly: 1-2 tablets daily.
  • Other Cases: 1 tablet daily or as directed by the physician.
  • Maximum Safe Dose: 2000 mg daily in divided doses.

Parenteral Administration:

  • Preferred Route: Vitamin C is usually administered orally. Parenteral routes (IM, IV, or subcutaneous) are considered when oral administration is not feasible or malabsorption is suspected.
  • Best Utilization: IM administration is preferred among parenteral routes.
  • Intravenous Injection: Dilution into a large volume parenteral (Normal Saline, Water for Injection, or Glucose) is recommended to minimize adverse reactions.
  • Average Protective Dose for Adults: 70 to 150 mg daily.
  • Scurvy Treatment: Doses of 300 mg to 1 g daily are recommended; up to 6 g parenterally to normal adults without toxicity evidence.
  • Wound Healing Enhancement: 300 to 500 mg daily for a week or ten days preoperatively and postoperatively.
  • Burn Treatment: For severe burns, daily doses of 1 to 2 g are recommended.
  • Increased Need for Vitamin C: In conditions with increased vitamin C requirements, three to five times the daily optimum allowances may be adequate.
  • Visual Inspection: Parenteral drug products should be visually inspected for particulate matter and discoloration before administration if the solution and container permit.
